Clean Energy Future: A Roadmap to 2050 and Beyond

Empowering a Sustainable Energy Revolution

Imagine a world where your choices today pave the way for a brighter tomorrow for generations ahead. That's the vision of Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) —a pathway to a clean, low-carbon economy by 2050. This roadmap isn't just about environmental goals; it's about seizing clean energy business opportunities that benefit us all.

Our journey towards a clean, low-carbon future isn't just about promises; it's about making progress that benefits us all

With Malaysia ranking 35th in the World Economic Forum's Energy Transition Index, the spotlight is on our journey toward net-zero emissions. By 2050, the aim is for 70% of our energy to come from renewable sources, driving decarbonisation, efficiency, and sustainable transport forward.

NETR is about action which involves implementing 10 flagship projects across six energy transition areas: energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen, bioenergy, green mobility, and carbon capture. These initiatives aren't just about sustainability—they're about building an energy system that's inclusive and resilient.

By attracting investments, creating jobs, and slashing CO2 emissions by over 10 million tons annually, we're not just making promises; we're making progress.

Strategies for Malaysia's Energy Transition and Low-Carbon Future

Key Initiatives:

Energy Efficiency: Focus on optimising resources, enforcing audits, and streamlining funding for retrofits to achieve a 22% energy savings by 2050.

Renewable Energy: Transition to low-emission renewable energy with a target of 70% capacity by 2050. Initiatives include solar parks, an RE exchange hub, and addressing sector uncertainties.

Hydrogen: Plan to phase out grey hydrogen, produce 2.3 Mtpa of green hydrogen by 2050, and establish hydrogen hubs. Introduction of regulations and incentives.

Bioenergy: Expand bioenergy with a 3.5 billion-litre biorefinery capacity and 1.4 GW biomass and biogas power generation by 2050. Strategies include exploring alternative feedstock and improving waste management.

Green Mobility: Targeting reduced greenhouse gas emissions in transport, aiming for a 40% public transport modal share by 2040 and 60% by 2050. Ambitious goals for EV manufacturing and net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050.

CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage): Envisioned role in achieving net-zero emissions, including developing three CCUS hubs in Malaysia by 2050.

The next phase focused on establishing a low-carbon pathway, national energy mix, emissions reduction targets, and enablers for Malaysia's energy transition.
